Title : Changes in the global incidence of diabetes, over a quarter century

Abstract:

Importance: Currently, Diabetes affects over 550 million people worldwide, and the annual expense of treating this disease is now estimated to exceed $1 trillion US dollars each year. The purpose of this global review was to examine the changes of Diabetes all over the world, and to discuss the possible underlying causes as well as new treatments. The International Diabetes Federation’s (IDF) data was used to calculate each country’s percentage change, in growth or reduction of Diabetes. Review of annual incidence reports from 187 countries to the IDF were examined to rate the percentage changes over the past mean 21 years, (range 13 to 24 years). The percentage mean changes were used for data analysis and comparison.
Observations: The incidence of diabetes displayed a mean growth of 493% globally, (range 2963% growth to -83% reduction). Additionally, 31 countries have shown growth rates exceeding 500% and in contrast 12 countries have shown reduction in cases of diabetes. Africa had the greatest continental change (+664%) while the Caribbean showed only a 45% growth in diabetes.
Conclusions: One variable that possibly influences increase in diabetes was the consumption of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in commercial food products. HFCS has been shown to skip one metabolic step in breakdown as comparison to glucose and HFCS elimination has restored insulin sensitivity. Food Allergen Elimination is a new treatment method that has shown restoration of insulin sensitivity. The purpose of this global review was to examine the changes of Diabetes all over the world.

Paired t-test on Global Old Cases versus NEW cases of Diabetes.
