Antibody

Antibody

Antibodies, also known as immunoglobulins, are specialized proteins produced by B lymphocytes in response to foreign substances called antigens. They play a central role in the body’s adaptive immune system by recognizing and binding specifically to pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, and toxins. Once attached to an antigen, antibodies help neutralize harmful agents, block their ability to infect cells, and mark them for destruction by other immune cells. There are five major classes of antibodies—IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD—each with distinct functions in immune defense. For example, IgG provides long-term protection, while IgA is important in mucosal immunity. Antibodies are essential for immune memory, enabling the body to respond more quickly and effectively upon re-exposure to the same pathogen.
