Chikungunya

Chikungunya

Chikungunya is a viral disease transmitted to humans through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. It is common in tropical and subtropical regions and often occurs in outbreaks. The disease is characterized by sudden onset of high fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, and skin rash. Joint pain can be intense and may persist for weeks or even months, affecting daily activities. Although chikungunya is rarely fatal, it can cause long-term disability, especially in older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions. There is no specific antiviral treatment; management focuses on relieving symptoms through rest, fluids, and pain relievers. Prevention is key and includes controlling mosquito populations, eliminating standing water, using insect repellents, and protective clothing. Public health measures are essential to reduce transmission and manage outbreaks.
