Cleft Lip And Palate

Cleft Lip And Palate

Cleft Lip and Palate are congenital conditions in which a baby is born with an opening or split in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate), or both. These occur when facial structures do not fully fuse during early pregnancy. Cleft lip and palate can affect feeding, speech development, hearing, and dental health, and may also impact a child’s social and emotional well-being. The exact causes are not always known, but genetic factors, maternal nutrition, infections, and environmental exposures may increase risk. Early diagnosis allows for timely planning of care. Treatment usually involves a series of surgical procedures, speech therapy, dental care, and long-term follow-up by a multidisciplinary healthcare team. With appropriate medical and social support, most children with cleft lip and palate can lead healthy, productive lives with good functional outcomes.
