Flood Risk Management

Flood Risk Management

Flood Risk Management is a comprehensive approach aimed at reducing the adverse impacts of flooding on human life, infrastructure, ecosystems, and economic activities. It involves assessing flood hazards, vulnerability, and exposure to develop strategies for prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Key components include land-use planning, floodplain management, early warning systems, resilient infrastructure design, and community awareness programs. Flood risk management also integrates nature-based solutions such as wetland restoration and river basin management to reduce flood intensity. From a public health perspective, effective flood risk management prevents injuries, waterborne disease outbreaks, displacement, and mental health impacts associated with floods. Climate change has increased the frequency and severity of flooding, making adaptive and integrated risk management essential. Collaboration among governments, engineers, public health professionals, and communities is critical to build flood resilience and protect vulnerable populations.
