Indigenous Health and Wellbeing

Indigenous Health and Wellbeing

Indigenous Health and Wellbeing is a vital area of public health that recognizes the unique health needs, cultural values, and lived experiences of Indigenous peoples. It takes a holistic approach to health, encompassing physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, social, and cultural wellbeing, rather than focusing solely on disease. Indigenous populations often experience significant health disparities due to historical injustice, colonization, socioeconomic disadvantage, and limited access to culturally appropriate healthcare services. Public health efforts in Indigenous health emphasize self-determination, community leadership, respect for traditional knowledge, and culturally safe care. Improving Indigenous health and wellbeing involves addressing social determinants such as education, housing, land rights, and food security, alongside strengthening primary healthcare and prevention programs. By supporting Indigenous-led solutions and culturally responsive policies, public health systems can promote equity, resilience, and improved health outcomes while honoring Indigenous identities, traditions, and rights.
