Occupational Medicine

Occupational Medicine

Occupational medicine is a medical specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of work-related injuries and illnesses. It aims to protect workers’ physical, mental, and social well-being by identifying occupational hazards and promoting safe working environments. Common concerns include exposure to chemicals, noise, radiation, ergonomic strain, stress, and infectious agents. Occupational medicine emphasizes risk assessment, workplace health surveillance, fitness-for-work evaluations, and rehabilitation. It also supports policy development, regulatory compliance, and employee health education. From a public health perspective, occupational medicine reduces workplace injuries, absenteeism, and long-term disability while improving productivity and quality of life. Strong occupational health systems contribute to safer industries, sustainable economic growth, and healthier workforces.
