Periodontal Diseases

Periodontal Diseases

Periodontal Diseases are inflammatory conditions that affect the tissues supporting the teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone. The most common forms are gingivitis, a mild and reversible inflammation of the gums, and periodontitis, a more severe condition that can lead to tooth loss if untreated. Periodontal diseases are primarily caused by the buildup of dental plaque containing harmful bacteria. Symptoms may include swollen or bleeding gums, bad breath, gum recession, and loose teeth. Risk factors include poor oral hygiene, smoking, diabetes, stress, and genetic susceptibility. Periodontal health is closely linked to overall health, as advanced gum disease has been associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes complications. Prevention and management focus on good oral hygiene practices, regular dental checkups, professional cleanings, and lifestyle changes. Early detection and treatment are essential for maintaining oral and systemic health.
