Phenotypic Prevention refers to preventive strategies aimed at reducing disease risk by modifying observable physical, biochemical, or behavioral characteristics (phenotypes) that contribute to illness. Unlike genotypic prevention, which focuses on genetic risk, phenotypic prevention targets modifiable traits such as blood pressure, blood glucose levels, body weight, cholesterol, and lifestyle behaviors. It is widely used in preventing chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and hypertension. Public health interventions include promoting healthy diets, regular physical activity, smoking cessation, stress management, and early screening to detect abnormal phenotypic markers. By identifying and managing these risk factors early, phenotypic prevention helps delay or prevent disease onset and reduce complications. This approach emphasizes practical, population-based strategies that are cost-effective and scalable. Phenotypic prevention plays a key role in improving health outcomes, reducing healthcare costs, and supporting long-term disease prevention efforts.
