Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) are infections primarily transmitted through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Common STDs include HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, and Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Many STDs may be asymptomatic in early stages but can lead to serious complications such as infertility, chronic pain, pregnancy complications, and increased risk of HIV transmission if untreated. Public health strategies focus on prevention through education, condom promotion, vaccination, routine screening, early diagnosis, treatment, and partner notification. Reducing stigma and improving access to sexual health services are critical components of effective STD control. Comprehensive STD prevention programs help protect reproductive health and reduce long-term public health and economic burdens.
